Last month we had the pleasure of visiting the South London studio of painter Mattia Guarnera-MacCarthy. In collaboration with the Deptford based gallery Studio/Chapple we were there as Mattia signed his upcoming limited edition print ‘Pink Durag’.
After graduating from Camberwell College of Art in 2022, Mattia has established himself as one of the most exciting young artist’s in London. He has exhibited with Guts Gallery (London), Better Go South (Berlin) and was a featured artist at Frieze 2023. Most recently he has had a solo exhibition ‘Mystic Cool’ at Tube Gallery (Palma) and is currently part of the group show ‘Dad Bods’ at The Hole (New York).
From his subterranean studio housed below the Ledbury Estate in Peckham, Mattia brings attention to often overlooked scenes and moments, recognising their potential to harness allegorical, ideological, and philosophical dialogues. In his most recent works, he has delved into an exploration of contemporary aesthetics, closely examining textures, fabrics, and figures whilst utilising perspective and focus to visually romanticise everyday life.
