Lydia Blakeley (b.1980, UK) gained her MA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths in 2019 and currently resides in North Yorkshire. Her practice navigates the visual ephemera of modern life in the form of paintings and sculpture. Utilising found imagery from a Google search or corporate self-help books in Charity shops, Lydia collects and repurposes her source material to present an aesthetic record of the aspirational yearnings within an individualistic society. A society with an increasing burden to exist visually via social media, leaving behind a trail of performative perfection.

‘Prosperous’ is based on a painting from Lydia’s ‘The High Life’ series. Originating during the Covid-19 pandemic, this series explores notions of escapism during a period of crisis and takes the 1995 Microsoft advertising campaign ‘Where do you want to go today?’ as a point of departure.

Lydia was recently a part of the exhibition ‘Present Tense‘ at the renowned Hauser and Wirth Gallery in Somerset which gathered together a selection of the most exciting emerging painters in the UK. She is represented by Niru Ratnam Gallery, London.
